214a The End of Roman Britain by Ed McWatt

Children’s author Ed McWatt and his perspective on the Roman Brexit – Rexit you might say, and how the end of Roman Britain might have felt to those at the time. And I find out that I’m not Spartacus. Darn.

  1. Did not care for this contributor. After the second or third strained Brexit comparison I gave up. Ignoring the vast differences between Romans being pushed out under pressure of barbarian invaders and telling the EU ‘No thanks’, simply injecting modern politics into a history podcast is off putting regardless of the position.

  2. I’m going to take a wild stab in the dark and guess that you voted ‘Leave’, right? 😉

In serious response, I was struck by the surface-level similarities to what’s going on in the UK right now – the theme I was exploring was what it must feel like to be experiencing one of the hinge points of history. Regardless of the obvious differences in cause, the modern and ancient exits from a wider European polity will/ did bring uncertainty and change.

I’m sorry this seemed facile to you. I really wasn’t making a point of political theory!

“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme”

  3. Unlike Oddhan, I did not detect a merciless harping-on about Brexit. Perhaps my American ear isn’t fine tuned to pick up and an underlying agenda one way or the other.
I liked this short episode on the end of Roman Britain. It is interesting just how little information there is on the important historical episode, and that one of the most commonly quoted mentions may have been about something else.
Oh, I do not think that “caveated” is a word. At least I hope that it isn’t.

  4. I tend to talk too much and write comments/posts that go from sentences into paragraphs into essays.

    This happened here.

I have decided to (save you all the hassle of reading it, OR, deprive you of a great read, depending on how you feel about it) and so all I will say is that I didn’t appreciate the pro-Brexit stuff, but I should admit that I am not a fan of Brexit itself, so perhaps I was/am just biased.

I realize i’m commenting on ancient episodes, making whatever I type largely irrelevant unless they are going to be funny/interesting to Dear Leader Crowther, so I will try to restrain myself in the future.

P.S. I love the “History of English” bits, and will be sure to look him up, and whether it’s my system or not, the intro music of your podcast always comes through very loud, and since I use headphones, I have to always be ready to turn the volume down a bit when I start an episode.
