A 1941 Powell and Pressburger film designed to persuade the American people of the need to join the war against the Nazis. “Goebbels considered himself an expert on propaganda, but I thought I’d show him a thing or two” said Pressburger. Did the film work?

  1. This reminds me of the time I started listening to the TTME England episode about The Archers, fully expecting it to be about Powell and Pressburger.

  2. This episode got me thinking about Casablanca, which was also obviously a propaganda film, but did a much better job of being entertaining. It was released in 1942, so maybe it’s possible it was made in 41 when the US wasn’t in the war yet. As with 49th Parallel, the cast was full of refugees from Europe. The IMDB trivia page (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0034583/trivia/) is full of interesting stuff about it.

    1. Yes, it’s certainly way more famous. I am ashamed to admit though, that I have never seen it…
