The History of England App

The new version of the History of England Members’ App has everything in one place:

Why use the History of England App?

The app is a webpage for mobiles that acts as a podcatcher dedicated to the History of England, and has everything in one place:

  • Members shedcasts are split into series making it easier to find what interests you in the big library of episodes
  • You can play each series easily start to finish without needing to create a queue or search for them on the feed (though you can create queues and download lists too!)
  • you have access to the advert-free History of England
  • You will find all History of England series and shedcasts in one place

This update makes it:

  • Quick and easy to install the link to your mobile device’s homepage
  • Improved management  – send episodes to a queue, or to a download manager for offline listening
  • Improved playback tools – choose speed, fast forward, scrub forward & back, pause

How to Download

Simply click on this link using your mobile device, iOS or Android (no point trying it on a laptop or desktop. And it’s not available in App stores).

You will need to log in using your normal membership details on the App to access and play episodes.

If you need to type it in, the URL is https://app.thehistoryofengland.co.uk

A Brief User Guide

I think it’s all self explanatory, but just to make sure you don’t miss anything.

  • The first image shows that you can access the menu at the top right of the Home Page to find the Queue and Download managers
  • Second image shows the Episode List page. The round icons show if an episode is partly finished, completely finished, or (if blank) not yet started
  • Third image shows how to access sub series from the Episode List page in the Shedcast group
  • Fourth image is the Episode page, showing playing tools, and that from there you can access your Queue, or Downloads for offline listening

Any questions – you can email me on david54031@gmail.com

Note: The Install Process

The ‘App’ is in fact a Progressive Web App (PWA). It’s basically a website optimised for mobile use. So ‘installing’ is simply adding a link to the webpage on your phone.

Usually the ‘Share’ symbol will appear, tap on that, bring up a scrollable list, and fine ‘Add to Home page’ and you are away. Sometimes, you will need to go through an extra step and tap on the menu button bottom right to get the ‘Share symbol’ up. See the image below.

    1. Thanks Martine – we are so pleased it actually seems to be hitting the spot at last…it’s been a long road!

  1. Hello – I was listening away happily on the app as is my wont, but for some reason the next episode didn’t start. Having tried to log off & back on, the app is telling me it can’t verify my membership, which is peculiar as I saw the monthly payment go out of my bank account a couple of days ago.

So basically – HELP!!! I need my HOE fix, especially over a bank holiday weekend, otherwise I might have to interact with people

    Thanks
    Maureen

    1. You are certainly still a member. I can log in – but can’t play anything at the moment. I am very sorry – I have sent a panicky note to the developer. EDIT: It is no working fine for me, and the devceloper. Could you follow the advice below?

Meanwhiel, you might try, coming out of the app, turning off your phone completely, wait 10 seconds, then turn on again and see if it works thereafter
Also, do check your connections I often find problems can be traced back to that
